We are here to help you find a job. Here are a few tips to take your career to the next level.

Resume Tips

Facilitek Services has seen thousands and thousands of resumes. While there is no one way to create your resume, we do have some suggestions that might help you. Your resume is the first thing a potential hiring manager will see. While it won’t get you the job, it will either get you an interview or it won’t. You want it to represent you well. Ultimately, a resume is selling YOU! If you aren’t communicating well in your resume, hiring managers will assume you are not a good communicator in person.

A few suggestions include:

  • Have a clear job title in mind. It’s okay to have a couple of different versions if you have more than one skill set. Make it easy for potential employers to know exactly what job you want.
  • Make sure it’s not too long. Regardless of your years of experience, you should not go over two pages. Most hiring managers are interested in 10-15 years of experience. You can truncate information from your early career.
  • Your summary should be very dynamic and tell your career in a nutshell. It should include your strongest achievements, your value, your experience, your target industry and your career goal.
  • Include key words so that you can be easily found by recruiters who conduct electronic screening. Key words should be words typically found in a job description.
  • Do not include a great deal of industry jargon. You should write your resume so anyone can understand what you do. Recruiters may not know the details of every type of job.
  • Death by bullets is a very common mistake. Be careful not to use only bullets.
  • Make sure you separate accomplishments from career duties. They should not be lumped together. By keeping them separate, you give them more attention.
  • Communicate strong abilities, depth, and unique qualities as these are what will put you ABOVE your competition.
  • Organize your information to make it easy to read. The reader usually reads the summary first and quickly scans job titles, experience, and education. Make sure your format stands out.
  • Proofread and spell check. Both of these are your friends, so do them!

Cover Letter Tips

Your cover letter will be read before your resume will. You want to make sure it grabs the reader’s attention so that they will want to read your resume.

  • Take your time in writing the cover letter. It should be thoughtful.
  • Show how you meet or exceed the job requirements and how you can contribute to the company’s growth. Cater your resume to the specific company and job requirements.
  • Emphasize your accomplishments by showing what a valuable contributor you have been and, therefore, will be.
  • Reference the job title and reference number so the recruiter knows which job you are applying for.
  • Keep it short. This is not where you tell your life story if you want to get to the next round.
  • Generate a call to action in your last paragraph. Express your interest in the job and state that you will follow up to ensure your resume was received and to discuss scheduling an interview to further discuss your qualifications.

Interviewing Tips

Interviewing can be very intimidating, but if you are prepared, you are golden. So how should you prepare? Here are some tips on interviewing:

  • Do your research! Learn about the company you are interviewing with. Know the basics.
  • Be prepared for the unexpected question. This is typically an interviewing trick to see how you handle pressure. If you expect it, you will pass with flying colors.
  • Dress professionally. Even if you know the company’s policy is to dress business casual, you should wear the traditional business suit. You are making a first impression and want to be professional.
  • Are you interviewing well? You think the interview went well, but how do you really know. We can help you with practice interviews and give you constructive feedback to land that job!
